A fine young player, whose instrument is bigger than he is.  Clive also plays second trumpet on some of the King Oliver titles.

Rod Mason himself needs no introduction to jazz fans in Plymouth, and the Plymouth Jazz Club is pleased to welcome him back once again to his home city. For those not in the know, in the late 1960's and early 70's, Rod played in many venues around the city, most notably "The Good Companions" in Mayflower Street.   About that time he was leading a band called "Bad Joke", a five piece band which played a mixture of traditional New Orleans numbers and English music hall tunes and songs of the 1930's.  The band packed the "Goodies" or "Gee Cees" every Sunday lunchtime and evening,, it was standing room only.
Band members were:
Rod Mason on cornet, clipper tone and vocals.
Johnny Withers banjo
Chris Haskins  bass guitar and vocals
Jimmy Garforth  drums
Dickie Bishop  guitar/banjo and vocals.

The band broke up round about 1979 and Rod went off to join the legendary "Dutch Swing College Band" for a few years.
In 1985 he  formed  the Hot Five, based in Germany.
The line-up includes:
Andy Leggett, clarinet, saxophone, vocals
One time member of Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band, leader of the Pigsty Hill Light Orchestra, musical director of Sweet Substitute, occasional guest with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra.

John Mortimer: trombone
John spent more than twenty five years with Ackers Bilk's Paramount Jazz Band.  He is widely acclaimed as Europe's greatest disciple of Kid Ory.

Fraser Gartshore, piano, harmonica
Fraser joined the band two years ago, following the sad death of Ralf Peyer their former German pianist. Fraser is a Scotsman living in Bonn.

Sean Moyses: banjo
Sean is simply one of Europe's greatest banjoists.  A fine rhythm man and a featured soloist.
