Jim Newton's 50 Shades of Jazz

Plymouth Jazz Club presents Jim Newton's 50 Shades of Jazz, a band formed by drummer Jim Newton to play a wide range of jazz styles including Blues, Latin, Smooth, Mainstream etc. with a bias towards danceable.

For this event Jim has augmented the usual quartet by adding Plymouth's favourite saxophonist, Martin Dale.

Jim Newton is one of the most experienced and versatile drummers around. He started as a rock and roller but soon discovered that there’s fun to be had with all sorts of music including rock, all forms of jazz from dixieland to big band, function bands, cabaret, pit work, country, blues etc. His style is more groove to support the front line than drumnastics. "It’s just gotta swing."

Martin Dale, saxes, is a talented ex-marine bandsman with a long experience of playing jazz. He is one of the busiest and most popular saxophonists in the South West. He was a member of the John Burch Octet, taking the tenor sax position when Dick Morrissey became ill, and is also a member of the London based group “Sax Appeal” and "Jack Bruce Blues Experience". Martin has worked on the Q.E.2 as lead alto player, backing such artists as Neil Sedaka, Petula Clark, and Tom Jones.
Martin’s Plymouth based band has worked with Jim Mullen, Roy Williams, Derek Nash, Dick Pearce, Bruce Adams, Digby Fairweather and the highly acclaimed Peter King to name but a few. Martin has also worked with the 2008 X Factor winner, Alexandra Burke.
Martin has recorded for the BBC on radio and television sound tracks. To date he has released 8CDs which have been played on both Radio 2,3 and Jazz FM.
Martin makes regular appearances at UK Jazz festivals, where he has performed with Lee Gibson, Alan Barnes, and Mark Nightingale. He runs his own quartet and appears regularly as a guest soloist.

Bassist Al Swainger is a consummate musician and probably the busiest, most in-demand bass player in the West-country. He is a regular member of Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen, (winners of the British Jazz Awards 'Best Small Group' category for several years running) as well as several local bands. He also has a number of CDs to his credit as a bandleader, including "The Art Trip" with Alan Barnes and other projects.

Pianist>Craig Milverton is a winner at the British Jazz Awards in the 'Best Pianist' category and is also a member of Digby Fairweather's Half Dozen. His trio is first choice for national and international jazz stars touring the region.

Petra Brown, vocals, is a talented singer who has been with the group since it's inception. Her soulful voice and endearing personality are sure to make her a favourite with audiences.

Expect a great evening of swinging mainstream jazz from this highly entertaining group!
