Jazz Company with Terry Sloggett
plus special guest
James Clemas
Terry Sloggett made his first professional appearance at the age of 15, joined a Regimental
Army band at the age of 18. On returning to the UK, and de-mobbed from the Army, he landed a residency in
Liverpool and on his night off would play at the Cavern Jazz Club (pre Beatles). He played in various bands
in Liverpool and Manchester and then got a job at the Flamingo Ballroom in Glasgow where he met his wife Isa.
A lifetime of music making followed including summer seasons at Butlins, world cruises and playing in big
bands and small bands alike. Along the way he worked with many of the stars of variety including Ken Dodd,
Bruce Forsyth and Mike Yarwood. He also toured with The Four Tops and The Three Degrees and appeared on TV
with stars including Helen Shapiro and Ralph McTell.
At the gig on 5th July we will be helping Terry to celebrate 65 years of music making. During that time he
has been an inspiration to many local musicians, when you listen to him you realise - that’s how jazz ‘should’
be played.
Jazz Company came together in the mid 1980s with a regular gig at the Barbican Wine Lodge. Over the years they have
held regular spots at the China House, the Copthorn Hotel and St Mellion Country Club as well as performing
at a myriad of functions. The band continues to play its unique blend of jazz in the mainstream, including
many of the Ellington classics, with a splash of Be-bop and a sprinkling of Latin lovelies. As well as
playing in Jazz Co all the members have expanded their musical horizons with other outfits and in various
styles of music.
Leader John Broad, guitar, played in the resident band when PYJC was based
in Lockyer Street many years ago and continues to enjoy playing jazz in all its various forms.
Judy Whitlock, double bass, has had a professional career in music education and after gaining an M.A. in
Film Music Composition has had 3 large scale pieces commissioned and premiered by Plymouth Symphony Orchestra, where
she leads the double bass section. She was a member of Back Seat Drivers, from which Jazz Company evolved.
Jim Newton is a vastly experienced drummer and excels in all forms of jazz from Dixieland to
big band. He leads his own band, Fifty Shades of Jazz and plays in many outfits around the South-west.
Special guest James Clemas is a graduate of Leeds College of Music and has been a backing
musician for some of the UK’s best jazz and soul acts. He has been a sideman for Digby Fairweather, Alan
Barnes, Dave O’Higgins and Roy Williams amongst many others.
