The Magnolia Jazz Band
A New Orleans style band new to Plymouth Jazz Club.
The Magnolia Jazz Band has been formed by banjoist Pete Miller to play in his favourite New Orleans style. Pete played with a number of
Surrey and Hampshire bands in the 1970s and early 80s, including Al Hogan's Goodtime Band and Jane Gwynne's Hot 6. On moving to Devon he joined up in 2007
with trumpet & trombonist Dave Martin , leader of City Steam J. B. and the Jabbo Five. Dave plays valve trombone with this band and
elsewhere plays cornet, trumpet, and flugelhorn. His nick-name is "Whispering Dave" after his style of singing. He has been active on the music scene in Devon
since the mid-1980s, being a founding member of the City Steam Jazz Band. He also plays regularly with Bob Reynold's New Society Jazz Band in Somerset, and
is second cornet in Steve Graham's Classic Jazz. Since retiring from teaching in 2005 Dave has had more time to devote to music and playing jazz has now
become something of an obsession!
Gordon Stafford, clarinet, is a wonderfully lyrical player whose facile technique has earned him national acclaim after 7 years with the
Eagle Jazz band. Founder member of both the Smokey City Jazz Band and Savannah Jazz Band.
Chris Stockings plays drums and is the most recent addition to the band. He has depped with the band for some years and he is now a permanent
fixture.
Completing the Band are two talented horn players.
Brian Down, cornet
Mike Lancaster, sousaphone
