ROGER MARKS' CORNISH ARMADA JAZZ BAND

Roger Marks' Cornish Armada Jazz Band makes a very welcome return visit to the Club. They have been together for more than twenty-five years, the band members coming from a variety of other orchestras, bands and groups local to the southwest. The band is revered for the sheer musicianship of its players and over the years has developed a high reputation nationally.  They play traditional jazz in a fine unrestricted style which has resulted in the high level of popularity which befits the quality of their music.

Roger Marks (trombone)
Roger is very well known throughout the UK having been a band leader for over 25 years. "He is a tasteful and accomplished trombone player, with a full, rounded tone, supple phrasing and a controlled, fluent flow of ideas. He delivers melody expressively" - Hugh Rainey, Jazz Journal International: Jan 2000.
"... It's also my belief, voiced more than once on this programme, that the fluent, warm and sonorous trombone playing of Westcountry based Roger Marks - cutting as it does a wide swathe of traditional come mainstream jazz - is of world class quality and should be acclaimed as such.." Humphrey Lyttelton - BBC Radio 2, 16 December 2002.
Roger now lives in Yelverton and claims to be able to see Cornwall.

Graham Trevarton (cornet & trumpet)
Graham started as a featured brass band musician but developed strong interest in jazz and now has a national reputation. He has performed regularly in Roger's bands in recent years. Graham comes from Somercourt in Cornwall and is a regular member of the Pennyroyal Jazz Band, The Dart Valley Stompers and the Pedigree Jazz Band. Graham adds a genuine 'Cornish' flavour to the band.
Gordon Stafford (clarinet)
Gordon was for many years a stalwart on clarinet for The Eagle Jazz Band until he retired to Newlyn in Cornwall. This has proved to be good fortune for the South West as Gordon now plays with a variety of bands
in the area.
Malcolm Hurrell (tenor banjo)
Malcolm was well known locally as a member of John Shillito's Rhythm Aces before touring with The Ken Collier Trust Band and with Brian Carrick's Algiers Stompers. Having retired from touring, Malcolm's happy smiling face can now be seen much more locally. Malcolm lives in Bideford not far from the Cornish border.
Tony Mann (sousaphone)
Tony is another brass band trained multi-instrumentalist with several years former experience with local West Country bands Equally at home playing double bass, Sousaphone or trombone, Tony is a valuable asset to any band.
Dave Cawse (drums)
Dave is a veteran drummer & band leader active in the area of Western Swing music with “Medicine Bow” and spent five years as leader of “Saraband”. Toured opposite Jerry Lewis with an appearance at the London Palladium. Well known in various local bands including jump-jive crew The Roosters.
